On Thursday the 5th of September 2019 the World's media gathered at The Loch Ness Centre where we are based. They gathered to hear the outcome of over a year's research by Prof Neil Gemmell and his team from The University of Otago in New Zealand. They've been examining over 250 water samples to test for DNA, to identify what species of living creatures are in Loch Ness.
Of course, the big reveal the World was looking for was if there was any evidence of Nessie - The Loch Ness Monster. In one way it was a bit of an anti-climax as there was no definitive evidence of a prehistoric-type marine reptile such as a plesiosaur.
The study also didn't find any evidence of catfish, sturgeon or shark, which are sometimes thought to be behind sightings of our elusive lady of the Loch. However, the team also found no evidence of seals or otters. We know seals are frequent visitors and there are otters all along the Loch edges where rivers and streams enter the Loch.
They did find an extraordinary amount of DNA from eels, which raised the possibility that Nessie could be a giant eel. Although the local experts believe the jury is still out on that one.
So the bottom line is that this evidence is inconclusive, and the mystery of Loch Ness continues. At the moment, Nessie will be left alone to appear sometime at a location of her choice on the Loch. We send out an open invitation to come and see for yourself as we are keeping all four hotels open all Winter 2019/20.
The interest in this particular study was that it took place at Loch Ness, which still holds a fascination around the globe into what inhabits these deep dark waters. There were over forty media crews from all over the World, including France, Japan, New Zealand, England, USA and Kazakhstan. The story went viral on Social Media and was the leading Tweet on Thursday morning.
This research proved Loch Ness is a world-leading laboratory for sampling and carrying out studies on biodiversity, so all in all, the whole exercise was a win-win event for all parties.
The Truth is still out there!!
